In the spotlight

The collection of the European Cartoon Center continues to expand every year. In our section 'in the spotlight' we regularly present a book or item from the collection to you.

    The Luxembourg cartoonist Pol Leurs created a permanent artwork on four doors, in 2013, on the occasion of his exhibition at the ECC. A unique piece in our collection.

    A truly unique artefact: the very first cartoon booklet of the Duinbergen Cartoon Festival, today known as the Knokke Cartoon Festival. Jan Oplinus , collector of cartoon books, has been searching for a copy for many years. But still has to  consult it here, at the European Cartoon Center.

    The cartoon café of the European Cartoon Center was named BRASSERie as a tribute to the Flemish cartoonist BRASSER. Incorporated into the café’s lighting are ten works by BRASSER themed around food and drinks.

    The Swiss Hans Peter Muster got the idea to write the three‑volume Who’s Who of Cartoon Art when his friend and cartoonist “JUSP,” newly appointed curator of Basel’s Collection of Caricatures and Cartoons, asked him whether he knew of a caricaturist named Deleysin.

    On the occasion of his 80th birthday, a retrospective exhibition of the Belgian cartoonist PUNT (Jan Van Der Aa) was organized in 2007 at the ECC. However, the week before the official opening, Van Der Aa passed away at the age of 80. His family donated Van Der Aa's entire cartoon archive to the European Cartoon Center.

    The Gustaaf Van Damme Library in the European Cartoon Center contains many reference works on cartoons. In the 1960s and 70s, in Flanders, cartoons as an art form were on the rise. Journalist Gaston Durnez was an enthusiast and followed the genre closely. He was the author of, among others, ‘The Laughing Pen. Cartoons.’

  • Opening hours

    Every Sunday from 10-12 and 14-17 you can visit the ECC as an individual with free entrance

    Winterbreak: the European Cartoon Center is closed between the 22nd of December till the 22nd of January.
