Paul De Valck was born in 1937 in Humbeek. He derived his pseudonym from the nickname of the people of Humbeek: the “BRASSERS”.
He created cartoons about Belgian politics, with a particular focus on the Flemish struggle, and through his drawings he also addressed economic and social themes.
In the early 1970s, De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad and De Gentenaar published the “schaVOTjes”, the much-discussed “GRAFiekjes” and “Brasserie”.
The ECC therefore decided to name the cartoon café after this column, BRASSERie. The lighting was decorated with ten cartoons on the theme of “food and drink”, as a tribute to one of Flanders’ greatest cartoonists.
BRASSER passed away on 15 March 2001. Ten years later, a tribute exhibition was organized at the European Cartoon Center.
