Kruishoutem celebrates Heritage Day 2026 with a generous dose of heritage fun. At the European Cartoon Center, discover how the town grew thanks to… the egg.
During Heritage Day 2026, the European Cartoon Center revives the unique grandeur of Kruishoutem as a European egg capital — with a healthy splash of humor. The Hultheim Local History Society and the ECC take visitors back to the days when the egg market, hatcheries, and auctions made the town buzz with activity and attracted traders from far and wide.
Alongside historical visual material highlighting this rich egg heritage, visitors can also admire the original Chicken & Egg cartoons from the very first Kruishoutem Cartoonales (1979 and 1981). These cartoons, now heritage in their own right, show just how deeply egg culture is embedded in Kruishoutem’s DNA.
The result is an exhibition that tells the story of a remarkable past with pride and a wink. Because heritage doesn’t always have to be serious — it can also be light-hearted and playful.
