Galym Boranbayev (Kazakhstan) is one of the most awarded cartoonists from Central Asia. He was born in 1975 and studied Fine Arts at the Abai Kazakh National University in Almaty.
Since the beginning of his career, Boranbayev has published cartoons in leading Kazakh newspapers.
Through humor, irony, and rich visual symbolism, he addresses complex issues such as human rights, war, and social inequality, always with an empathetic undertone. His critique avoids sharp satire and is instead conveyed in a subtle and playful manner, making his cartoons both accessible and universal.
Boranbayev is a laureate of more than fifty national and international cartoon competitions worldwide, ranging from Korea to Brazil. Among his most prestigious distinctions are two Grand Prix awards: the Nasreddin Hodja International Cartoon Contest (Turkey, 2019) and the Molla Nasreddin International Cartoon Contest (Azerbaijan, 2005).
In addition, he has won numerous first prizes in countries including China, Iran, Spain, Turkey, and Kazakhstan, underscoring his consistent artistic quality and international relevance.
His work has also been warmly received in Belgium. In 2020, Boranbayev won the First Prize at the George van Raemdonck Cartoonale, and in 2024 he received the Silver Hat Award in Knokke‑Heist. He also won third prize at the Vianden International Cartoon Contest (Luxembourg) in 2010.
Boranbayev has held solo exhibitions in Almaty (2006, 2011) and Zharkent (2014). This exhibition at the European Cartoon Center marks his first solo exhibition in Western Europe.
