With GNIFFEL, Iris Van Robays (31) brings together a selection of her most beloved Kwinkslagerijen and standalone cartoons. Born in Kortrijk, raised in Ingelmunster and for the past ten years based in Ghent, she has built a practice in which language and image joyfully challenge one another.

After completing a master’s degree in Graphic Design at LUCA School of Arts and spending a short period in Amsterdam, she returned to the Artevelde city with a suitcase full of enthusiasm, coloured pencils and plans.

Since 2019, she has been drawing De Kwinkslagerij weekly for De Standaard: a column in which wordplay and images happily collide. What starts as a linguistic twist inevitably ends in a drawing with a wink.

Alongside this, she works as a freelance illustrator, cartoonist and creative jack‑of‑all‑trades. She gives workshops and creates postcard poetry for De Typotheek.

Iris plays with language, tilts the everyday and enjoys nudging reality slightly off balance, inviting you to look differently at what you thought you knew.

GNIFFEL invites you into her world of wordplay, small absurdities and gentle wonder. Expect sparkle, double meanings and—hopefully here and there—an unexpected laugh, ranging from a subtle snigger to uninhibited belly laughter.

Practical information

  • Opening hours

Every Sunday from 10-12 and 14-17 you can visit the ECC as an individual with free entrance

Winterbreak: the European Cartoon Center is closed between the 22nd of December till the 22nd of January.

  • Fee

As we want to promote cartoons as an art form to the general public and find it important that everyone has the possibility to see cartoons, you can visit the ECC on Sunday by the 'Pay what you wish'-principal. You decide what your visit to the exhibition is worth and according your own budget. This way of working is only possible because the European Cartoon Center is a non-profit organization that operates 100% on volunteers.

Keep in mind that your voluntary contribution makes it possible to make cartoon art accessible to all.

For groups there are different paid formulas:

    • Formula A: 5 euro per person (with a minimum of 50 euro) admission and introduction
    • Formula B: 8 euro per person (with a minimum of 80 euro) admission, introduction and a free drink of your choice
