Previous exhibitions - Oskar Weiss (Switzerland)
From 25 june till 18 september 2017
Oskar Weiss was born in Chur (Switzerland) in 1944. His childhood was marked by moves and travels across borders, long before he himself traveled his pencil on paper. After a promising beginning in Vienna and Berne, his career as a model pupil ended abruptly on a fiasco in mathematics, an experience that left him no sequels, but made him discover, on the contrary, his true talent, his vocation. At the age of eighteen, he exhibited his first paintings.
From 1963 to 1968, he studied graphic design at the School of Visual Arts in Zurich. At the same time, he wrote his first songs, which he interpreted by accompanying himself on the guitar. He continued his career as a songwriter until 1978, performing alone or with the "Trouvères bernois" on the stages of the small theaters of Bern and elsewhere.
In 1969, a year after graduating, he settled as free lance artist. During the following years, the graphic artist transformed himself into an "inventor of images", exploring and refining his own style, tinged with poetry, humor and a touch of satire. Today, the artist's range goes from cartooning to painting and illustrations.
The most characteristic for the works of Oskar Weiss's are those in which his observation of the realities of life merges with the playful inventions of his overflowing imagination into an unexpected unity.
He has also worked for the weekly "Die Weltwoche", for the satirical newspaper "Nebelspalter" and for the dailies "Berner Zeitung" and "Neue Zürcher Zeitung". He is also the author of several murals, and he exhibits regularly in various art galleries. His books, for children and adults, have won several awards and are very popular with the public.
