Cristina Sampaio was born and lives in Lisbon. She graduated in 1985 from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. She started illustrating children's books in 1987, field where she published more than twenty books. She is also represented in numerous collective illustration and cartoon publications. She has been a member of the association Cartooning for Peace since 2009.

In 1986 she began to work as an illustrator and cartoonist for several national and international magazines and newspaper, namely Expresso, Público and O Independente (Portugal), Courrier International (France), Kleine Zeitung (Austria), The Boston Globe and The New York Times (USA).

In 1998, she created the stage set for the children's musical “Bom Dia, Benjamim!”. She also worked in multimedia for the Centro Ciência Viva and for APM. She was editor of the infographics section of the newspaper Público and made animation short films for television.

Her work has been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Norway, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. Her work was the subject of two retrospective exhibitions: “Drawing of The Day, a decade of illustrations in Público” (2001) and “Poetic of Humor” (2018).

Among other awards, in 2009 she was awarded the best illustration award for children's literature and in 2006 and 2010 she received the award for the best Portuguese press cartoon. In 2014 she was awarded the prestigious Ciência Viva Media award. In 2007 she received the first prize in the World Press Cartoon and an honorable mention in 2009 and in 2015.

Vicente Jorge Silva, journalist and founding editor of the newspaper Público:

“What enchants me in Cristina’s work is the purity and delicacy of her cartoon style as well as the unceasing freshness and acuity in observation with which she comments on situations and personalities in the news (and not only there).

The elegance and subtlety of Cristina’s drawing style are not only rarities at a time that seems greatly prone to coarseness and vulgarity. They also typify the nature of her equally rare and invaluable humour that challenges the intelligence of our gaze and enhances a fine apprehension of reality. Cristina’s drawings are thus precious gold nuggets as well as of singular civic utility in these troubled times. We enter a “poetic dimension of journalism” through them. And, undoubtedly, of humour.”
